USA defeat Hong Kong, China, secure spot in Finals 2024
The United States became the first national team to clinch the spot in the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Finals 2024, with a 29-0 win over Hong Kong, China on Saturday. Team USA's record is now 4-0, which guarantees them a place in the Finals.
USA were on a mission to punch their ticket to next year’s Finals. And they did it in the first inning, sending 25 hitters to the batting box and scoring 20 runs. They added two more in the second and seven in the bottom of the fourth.
Kelsie Whitmore, Remi Schaber and Naomi Ryan combined for a five-inning no-hitter, striking out 10. Whitmore earned the win in three innings of work. Schaber and Ryan tossed one inning each.
Alex Hugo homered in the first inning and recorded seven RBIs in the game. Jamie Baum also hit a homer in the fourth frame and produced three runs.
On Sunday, USA will face Mexico aiming to finish the tournament undefeated and in first place in Group A.
