The first organised baseball championship in Spain dates back to 1944 when Espanyol defeated America Madrid in the final to claim the title. The baseball division of historic soccer club Real Madrid dominated from 1945 to 1961. Viladecans Barcelona started another dynasty in 1982, winning 21 consecutive pennants.
In the meantime, the Royals Spanish Baseball Softball Federation (RFEBS) re-branded the National Championship into Division de Honor in 1986.
In 2021, RFEBS changed the denomination of the top Spanish baseball championship to the Spanish Baseball League. In 2025, the denomination changed to the current National Baseball League (Liga Nacional de Beisbol) Division de Honor Oro (gold), with the second league named Division de Honor Plata (silver).
The 2026 Division de Honor Oro features nine participating teams: Antorcha Valencia, Astros, Barcelona, San Inazio Bilbao, Irabia, Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz, Miralbueno, Sant Boi and Pamplona Toros.
The top five finishers after a 32-game regular season will compete in a round-robin, with the first- and second-place teams advancing to the best-of-five Spanish Series.
The Marlins lead the standings undefeated. They won the first 12 games they played, scoring 138 runs on 150 hits, including 32 doubles and 17 home runs. They allowed only 12 runs, nine earned on their pitchers in 92 innings, and committed only four errors.
Astros Valencia, the only other team that won the pennant between 2013 and 2025 (2016, 2020 and 2024) are in second place with a 9-1 record.
The Marlins will host the Astros in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, on May 15.
