Sincelejo 2026 delivers strong economic and social legacy through WBSC U-23 Men's Softball World Cup
The WBSC U-23 Men's Softball World Cup 2026 held in Sincelejo, Colombia from 25 April to 3 May, has left a powerful legacy beyond the field, underlining the significant economic and social impact that international Baseball/Softball events can generate for host cities.
According to local authorities, the tournament boosted Sincelejo’s economy by over 30%, driven by the presence of around 120,000 fans and thousands of visitors throughout the competition. The event generated more than 10,000 jobs, both direct and indirect, providing a substantial boost to local businesses and the wider community.
Hotel occupancy rates reached between 95% and 98%, reflecting the high demand created by the tournament while Sincelejo welcomed approximately 1,000 international visitors and more than 30,000 domestic tourists, contributing to a surge in commercial activity. Local economy sectors reported sales exceeding 15 billion Colombian Pesos (approximately US$3.8 million) during the event.
Beyond its economic impact, the WBSC U-23 Men's Softball World Cup 2026 also delivered key infrastructure improvements. The Eduardo Porras softball stadium was renovated to meet international standards, ensuring a long-term legacy for athletes and the local community. Meanwhile, the 20 de Enero stadium recorded some of the highest attendances in its history, with multiple sold-out sessions. The final drew approximately 10,000 fans, while an estimated 2,000 additional spectators were unable to secure tickets.
“I believe this marks a new starting point… the legacy it leaves is very significant,” said Organising Committee President Carlos Lugo. He added that successfully hosting a WBSC Softball World Cup should inspire local stakeholders to continue developing the city’s potential and to pursue future international sporting events across different disciplines.
The WBSC U-23 Men's Softball World Cup 2026 in Sincelejo not only showcased world-class softball but also demonstrated the long-term value that global sporting events can bring to host communities, both economically and socially.
