Rio Takahashi named WBSC U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup 2026 MVP after dominant final leads Japan to world title

Japan’s Rio Takahashi was named the Most Valuable Player of the WBSC U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup 2026 after delivering a championship-winning performance on the biggest stage. The right-hander was dominant in the final - which saw world No. 1 Japan beat No. 6 and defending champions Australia 4-2 - pitching seven innings while allowing just four hits and two runs (one earned), striking out eight and walking four to secure the gold medal.

Being in control during six innings, Takahashi gave up two runs in the seventh. “I was definitely feeling the fatigue,” he said after the game. “In that situation, I told myself not to pitch defensively, but to stay aggressive and attack the hitters.” That mentality proved decisive as he closed out the win and etched his name as the standout performer of the tournament.

Reflecting on the achievement, Takahashi, who also helped pitch Japan to victory over Mexico in the WBSC U-18 Men's Softball World Cup 2023 final, emphasised the emotional weight of the moment. “I’m really happy to have finally achieved the dream I’ve had, winning the championship and becoming world number one,” he said. 

Looking ahead, he also underlined his ambitions beyond the U-23 level: “I want to use this experience to continue growing so I can be selected for the top team and win at that level as well,” he said.

All-World Team announced

Alongside Takahashi’s MVP recognition, the tournament’s All-World Team highlighted the best performers across all positions. Mexico’s Christian Del Valle was selected as catcher, while Australia’s Boston Lowe earned the nod at first base. Japan’s Kyogo Agata was named at second base, with Venezuela’s Juan Pereira at third. The infield was rounded out by New Zealand’s Tane Mumu at shortstop. 

The outfield selections featured Japan’s Masaya Usuki and Kaito Shiba, alongside New Zealand’s Ryan Earley. 

Australia’s Jack Besgrove, one of the tournament’s most dominant pitchers, was included on the team, while Venezuela’s Alvi Paredes was named as the designated player.

Individual awards recognise tournament’s top performers

In addition to the MVP honour for Takahashi, several players were recognised for their outstanding statistical performances throughout the competition (not counting the medal games). Canada’s Adrian Green finished as the leading hitter with a .545 batting average, while Australia’s Besgrove led pitchers with a remarkable 0.59 ERA and a perfect 5–0 record.

Argentina’s Khalil Luna dominated offensively, leading the tournament in runs batted in (13), home runs (6), and runs scored (13). New Zealand’s Mumu topped the stolen bases category with seven.

Japan’s Shiba was honoured as the Outstanding Defensive Player, recognising his excellence in the field and his key role in Japan’s championship run.
