New Zealand secure WBSC U-18 Men’s Softball World Cup berth with unbeaten run in Oceania Qualifier

New Zealand defeated Australia 7-2 in the final of the WBSC Oceania U-18 Men’s Softball Qualifier to complete an unbeaten three-day campaign on home soil.

Hosts New Zealand earned the Oceania berth for the WBSC U-18 Men’s Softball World Cup 2027 after defeating Australia 7-2 in the final of the WBSC Oceania U-18 Men’s Softball Qualifier in Palmerston North, completing an unbeaten run across the three-day event.

The Under 18 Black Sox, who advanced directly to the final after finishing top of the standings after the round-robin phase, faced Australia for the third time in the tournament.

Australia struck first in the third inning, scoring twice to take a 2-0 lead. Flynn Edards doubled to left field to bring in Cameron Parker, before Ethan Scott added another run as Edards advanced on a wild pitch.

New Zealand responded immediately in the bottom of the third inning, capitalising on pressure situations to level the game. Mikaera Kingi-Hicks scored on a fielding error, and Boston Allan crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it 2-2.

The decisive moment came in the fourth inning when Rico Ratu hit a two-run home run to centre field, bringing in Gerbes Jackson and giving New Zealand a 4-2 advantage. From that point, New Zealand maintained control of the game, limiting Australia’s opportunities to close the gap.

New Zealand added to their lead in the fifth inning, with Boston Allan scoring after advancing on a wild pitch sequence, extending the margin to 5-2. In the sixth inning, Ratu was again involved as he crossed the plate on a wild pitch, while Raumana Kumeroa advanced to third, pushing the score further in New Zealand’s favour.

Australia continued to create opportunities, placing runners on base in the later innings, including in the seventh, but were unable to convert as New Zealand’s defence held through the closing stages to secure the 7-2 result.

Australia reached the final after defeating American Samoa 17-0 in the qualification game played prior to the decider. The game was effectively settled in the first inning, where Australia scored 14 runs. Jackson Jones highlighted the inning with a three-run home run, while multiple players contributed to the scoring sequence as the game concluded in three innings.

New Zealand’s place in the final had been confirmed on Day 2, where they recorded an 11-1 win over American Samoa and a 10-4 victory against Australia to finish first in the standings. Australia also secured an 11-0 win over American Samoa to place second.
