WBSC and Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union sign strategic agreement to expand global reach of Baseball/Softball
The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) marking a significant step forward in expanding the global reach and visibility of Baseball/Softball across one of the world’s most populous regions.
Under the MoU, ABU will distribute WBSC event highlights to its members on a non-exclusive basis, significantly enhancing the exposure of WBSC competitions across key and emerging markets.
The partnership will also focus on the development and exchange of best practices and technical standards in sports broadcasting, while exploring collaboration in areas such as media rights management and educational initiatives, including both online and in-person programmes.
“This Memorandum of Understanding represents an important opportunity for growth and exposure for international Baseball/Softball,” said WBSC Executive Director Michael Schmidt. “Through ABU’s extensive network, we can strengthen our presence across the Asia-Pacific region and engage with new audiences beyond our traditional strongholds. We look forward to building a lasting and impactful partnership in the years ahead.”
“Our member broadcasters are always looking for high-quality sports content that can enhance their programming line-up and bring more international events to local audiences across the Asia-Pacific region," said Cai Yanjiang, Director of ABU Sports. "Through this collaboration with the WBSC, broadcasters will have greater access to Baseball and Softball coverage, helping broaden the range of sports content available across their platforms.”
Founded in 1964, the ABU is the world’s largest broadcasting union, representing approximately 224 member organisations across 66 countries and serving more than half of the global population. Headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the ABU plays a pivotal role in advancing broadcasting standards and fostering cooperation among its diverse membership throughout the Asia-Pacific region.
The MoU will remain in effect through the end of 2028, with the potential to expand into additional areas of cooperation as the partnership evolves.
