Puerto Rico ace Isabella Ortiz: "The U-15 Women's Softball World Cup was an amazing experience"
Isabella Ortiz played at an outstanding level at the WBSC U-15 Women's Softball World Cup 2025. She was on the field in all nine games that Puerto Rico played. She went 9-for-19, a .474 batting average, with one home run and 14 runs batted in (RBIs), tied with Khloe Williams (USA) for the most runs batted in (14),
As a pitcher, she had the best win/loss ratio with a 3-0 record. She appeared in five games, pitching 18.2 innings and allowing a respectable 1.88 earned run average (ERA).
Ortiz will earn her place in Puerto Rico's softball history for the key win against world No. 1 USA, which booked a spot in the final for the world No. 3. She dominated the incumbent U-15 World Champions. Ortiz took over pitching duties with a runner at third and one out. She retired 14 batters in a row, earning the win.
"I just thought about my pride for Puerto Rico," Ortiz commented after the Closing Ceremony. "We recently lost our coach, and I just thought about playing for him the entire time, so I just put my pride on my back, and that led me throughout the whole game. I feel very excited and overwhelmed about the win. Honestly, I feel you don't have to credit only me. It was a team effort."
Born in 2011, Ortiz grew up in the United States, where she plays softball on a travel team and aspires to a collegiate career.
"I've been to Puerto Rico a bunch of times, to visit family and for sports. I feel a strong connection to the island and my family. It makes me feel more proud. It makes me feel I can win for my community."
Despite not being able to improve on Puerto Rico's result from the inaugural edition of the WBSC U-15 Women's Softball World Cup in 2023 where they beat Japan but lost to USA in the final, Ortiz doesn't believe finishing second should disappoint Puerto Rico.
"Second place is an amazing accomplishment. I think we built an amazing bond. I do not believe every team here has that. We were able to come back in situations where other teams wouldn't have. It is a big part of the game knowing that the girl behind you is your backup, no matter what."
"[Overall, the tournament] was an amazing competition. Not only did we have to battle against USA, Japan, and Chinese Taipei, we had to battle against any other team. It was an amazing experience for the team and those around us."
