WBSC Academy: New Scoring Features Available – Launch of Introductory Scorer Course

The course, which is available in both English and Spanish to ensure global accessibility and inclusivity, consists of 10 chapters. While the course material is available to access online, anyone wishing to complete the Basic Course tests and obtain a certificate must do so through the WBSC Academy.

The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) is pleased to announce the launch of a new set of scoring resources now available on the WBSC Academy, including a dedicated Basic Scoring Course aimed at introducing the fundamentals of scoring to baseball and softball enthusiasts around the world.

Developed by the WBSC Scoring Commission, this new online course is designed as a self-learning programme and serves as the ideal starting point for anyone wishing to begin their journey as a scorer.

The course, which is available in both English and Spanish to ensure global accessibility and inclusivity, consists of 10 chapters, starting with a general introductory section and then a generic explanatory Chapter 0, followed by 10 structured modules that guide learners through the core concepts and practices of official scoring. Each chapter concludes with a brief quiz to assess comprehension and unlock the next level, allowing learners to progress at their own pace.

In parallel, the WBSC Scoring Commission has also developed a specialised training module titled the BallClubz Scoring Application Course. This course provides step-by-step guidance on how to effectively operate the WBSC’s official scoring application, currently in use at WBSC-sanctioned competitions.

Additionally, the WBSC Academy hosts a comprehensive library of downloadable materials and official documents that scorers can use to support their work during tournaments. These resources ensure that aspiring and active scorers alike have access to standardised tools and references.

While the course material is available to access online, anyone wishing to complete the Basic Course tests and obtain a certificate must do so through the Academy. Therefore, please register with the WBSC Academy using your MyWBSC user profile. If you don't have one, please contact your National Federation of belonging.

To complement the online coursework, the WBSC has also introduced a series of WBSC Online Workshops. Initially tested through pilot events, these workshops are now open to scorers worldwide. They provide an interactive forum for discussing specific game situations, correct paper-based scoring techniques, and best practices, thereby enhancing the learning experience through peer exchange and expert input.

Through this programme of self-learning courses and educational materials, the WBSC Scoring Commission believes it is possible to grow the global base of scorers, enabling fans of our sport to start understanding and appreciating the vital role of the official scorer.

Looking ahead, work is already well underway on the Licensing Course, which will be officially announced upon completion. This second course will offer a pathway for scorers to become WBSC-certified scorers. In essence, the idea is to provide a variety of educational tools that allow newcomers to embark on their scorer journey, while also helping current scorers stay updated and in practice.

The Licensing Course will be a paid course (US$120 per participant) and upon completion, candidates will be required to take a live video exam administered by the WBSC Scoring Commission.

The long-term objective of these courses is to create an official WBSC scorer classification system with clear categories:

  • Aspirant Scorer
  • Licensed Scorer
  • National Scorer
  • International Scorer

Licensed scorers will be authorised to officiate at official WBSC events. National and international scorers, based on years of verified service and demonstrated expertise, may then be certified as a Scorer Specialist (5 years of repeated and continued continental/international experience) or a Scorer Master (10 years of repeated and continued continental/international experience).

With this wide range of accessible and practical materials, the WBSC aims to support the development of a new generation of scorers globally. Whether aspiring to contribute at the national, continental, or international level, learners can now follow a clear, structured educational path toward becoming WBSC-certified scorers - equipped with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to officiate at the highest levels of the game.

Visit the WBSC Academy today to begin your journey in the world of scoring and become part of the global baseball and softball officiating community.
