WBSC shows commitment to good governance, participates in IPACS Annual General Conference

The 7th IPACS Annual General Conference covered the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the fight against corruption in sport.

The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) took part in the International Partnership Against Corruption in Sport (IPACS) Annual General Conference in Rome earlier this month, underlining the WBSC’s commitment to good governance.

WBSC Chief Operating Officer Marco Ienna was among more than 125 representatives from governments, international sports bodies, intergovernmental organisations, law enforcement and anti-corruption bodies, united by their determination to protect the integrity of sport.

The 7th IPACS Annual General Conference was hosted by the Italian National Olympic Committee and led by the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer Pâquerette Girard Zappelli.

This year’s discussions notably covered the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the fight against corruption in sport and included an update from the IPACS Task Force on Good Governance, which Ienna is a member of, on the implementation of the IPACS Sport Governance Benchmark.

Participants additionally appointed the Swiss Government as the new chair of IPACS for 2025 to 2026, succeeding the IOC in line with a rotational principle.

They also developed a broad consensus on the importance of cross-sector collaboration between law enforcement, criminal justice authorities and sports organisations.

The WBSC and its dedicated Integrity Unit are committed to the highest standards of good governance and accountability, ensuring a safe, diverse and trustful environment for athletes to thrive.

In the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations Governance Review earlier this year, the WBSC made further improvements and scored an impressive 45 points out of 48 in the transparency section, ranking it as the top International Federation compared to eight others of a similar size.

The WBSC also featured nine times in the best examples, including in integrity investigations, diversity monitoring, environmental monitoring and social responsibility.
