WBSC U-23 Men's Softball World Cup 2026: Japan are the new World Champions

Japan claimed the WBSC U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup title for the first time, reversing the result in the final of the inaugural edition three years ago, which Australia had won.

World No. 1 Japan clinched the WBSC U-23 Men's Softball World Cup 2026 title with a 4-2 win over No. 6 Australia, in the World Championship Game played in Sincelejo, Colombia in front of a fully packed 20 de Enero stadium with over 10,000 fans on Sunday.

Rio Takahashi, who earned MVP honours, led from the front for Japan with a dominant pitching display in the final. The right-hander went the distance, tossing seven innings with four hits and two runs allowed (one earned), striking out eight and walking four to secure the championship, having also help pitch Japan to victory over Mexico in the WBSC U-18 Men's Softball World Cup 2023 final.

This marked the second consecutive WBSC U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup final between the two nations, following their meeting in Parana 2023, where Australia claimed the title with a 1-0 win.

Japan’s head coach, Kenji Nakamura, emphasised that the team’s preparation for the final was shaped by their earlier game in the Super Round, which Australia won 6-5. “We had faced them once in the Super Round, so we focused our scouting on their pitching,” he said. “We also trained specifically on how to face Australia's pitching.”

In terms of late-game strategy, Nakamura showed full confidence in his players and staff. When asked whether he considered a pitching change in the final defensive inning, he responded: “No, we didn’t.”

Nakamura also underlined the broader significance of the victory. “This is the greatest championship for a Japanese team,” he stated, despite Japan’s history of success at the U-18 level where they have medalled 12 times out of 14 editions. “I think everything we’ve built up until now came together here. This final victory belongs to all of Team Japan.”

This marks Japan’s first-ever title in the U-23 category and their fifth men's softball world championship overall, having previously won four titles at the U-18 level. However, Japan have never captured a senior men’s world championship, making the WBSC U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup title in Sincelejo the most significant achievement in the history of Japan’s men’s softball programme.

Jack Besgrove gets the start for Australia, while Rio Takahashi takes the circle for Japan.

Japan struck early in the top of the first inning. Ryuki Tsuda led off with a walk, and a defensive error soon put runners on the corners with no outs. Koki Yagi opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly, and Rikuto Yamamoto followed with an RBI triple to the left-field corner, extending the lead to 2-0.

Takahashi is delivering a strong performance in the circle. Through four scoreless innings, he has recorded four strikeouts while allowing just one walk. The game remains 2-0 for Japan.

Japan added to its lead in the top of the fifth inning. Ryuki Tsuda beat the throw on a grounder to first base and then scored on a two-out double by Masaya Usuki. Four pitches later, Usuki came home on a single to right field by Koki Yagi, extending the advantage to 4-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, Australia mounted a comeback that ultimately fell just short. Oliver Stewart led off the rally with a solo home run, putting Australia on the board.

With two outs, Kynan Molander singled, Lachlan Hort reached on a fielding error, and Haydan Dobe drove in Australia’s second run to bring the potential tying run on base. However, Takahashi got Boston Lowe to ground out to second base to clinch the world title.
