Students with intellectual disabilities break new ground at Japanese Baseball5 National Championship Qualifier

The Para-JUNK 5 Youth team included two junior high students and six high school students, all from different special-needs schools. Their effort champions Baseball5's inclusiveness.

A pioneering team of students with intellectual disabilities, Para-JUNK 5 Youth, proudly took part in the Youth Kanto Region Qualifier for the Japanese Baseball5 National Championship, marking an inspiring moment for inclusivity in the World Baseball Softball Confederation's (WBSC) urban discipline.

The Para-JUNK 5 Youth team featured two junior high school students and six high school students from several special-needs schools across the region. With dedicated guidance from the JUNK 5 team and student-athletes from Obirin University, the young athletes began their training journey in September, embracing the fast-paced, dynamic format of Baseball5.

Despite not securing a victory, Para-JUNK 5 Youth delivered performances that resonated far beyond the scoreboard. They scored three and four runs in two of their games - tangible proof of their determination, growth, and competitive spirit.

Their participation also showcased how Baseball5’s accessible, urban format can open doors for athletes of all abilities.

Throughout the tournament, the eight players exhibited remarkable independence and team spirit - highlighted by their own spontaneous team meeting.

Their commitment to the five-on-five version of Baseball/Softball has laid a strong foundation for continued development, with the Para-JUNK 5 project set to move forward into 2026.

The Japanese Baseball5 National Championship will take place on 17–18 January 2026 at the Yokohama Budokan, where Japan’s most promising teams will compete for national honours.

The qualifying events are available on the Baseball5 Japan Youtube Channel.
